PITTSBURGH — Brian C. Vertz, partner of family law firm Pollock Begg Komar Glasser & Vertz LLC, has been appointed National Chair of the Amicus Committee of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML).

An amicus, or “friend of the court,” may be permitted to submit a legal brief to assist an appellate court to recognize important policies and public interests that may be affected by the court’s decision in a lawsuit. These briefs typically introduce concerns that may have broad legal effects of a court decision that expand beyond the parties involved. The AAML advocates policies that promote the rights of children and families facing divorce.

For more than two decades, Vertz has prosecuted and defended family law appeals in the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court. This new appointment, which does not receive compensation, will further his experience in pro bono work nationally for issues including child support, grandparent custody rights, and same-sex divorce.

“I look forward to this opportunity which will allow me to develop and improve the practice of family law as well as promote the welfare of families and children on a broader scale,” said Vertz.

The AAML’s Amicus Committee has had a significant impact on the lives of same-sex couples, filing a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that now allows same-sex couples to have access to federal benefits. Previously, the AAML’s Amicus Committee filed a winning brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case that upheld a parent’s constitutionally protected interest in raising their own children.

Inducted as a fellow in 2003, Vertz adds this appointment to his list of accolades, including a recent AAML arbitration training. Vertz joined Pollock Begg shortly after its inception in 2001 and became named partner in 2012. His list of numerous professional accolades includes Best Lawyers in America every year since 2010 and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers every year since 2005.

AAML membership is restricted to those recognized by judges and attorneys as prominent family law practitioners with a high level of knowledge, skill, and integrity. There are currently 1,600 members in 50 states.
