PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh family law attorney Brian C. Vertz, has been elected to the national board of directors of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting children, parents and families coping with conflict and transition.

The AAML Foundation was established in 1990 to advance the goals of the AAML through charitable endeavors benefitting children and parents adversely affected by the breakup of the family unit.

Last year, the Foundation made grants of more than $150,000 to local and national organizations in 16 states. Grants funded a variety of programs including training to help caregivers develop effective co-parenting skills and counseling for children living with the stress of divorce and custody disputes or struggling with dependency, domestic violence and parental substance abuse or mental illness.

Vertz, a partner at Pittsburgh-based Pollock Begg Komar Glasser & Vertz LLC, is a life fellow of the AAML Foundation and a member of its Fundraising and Long Range Planning committees. In 2016, he organized its Joanne Ross Wilder Memorial Lecture exploring implicit bias in family law courts.

In addition to his work with the Foundation, Vertz also was appointed president of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the AAML organization in July. He previously served as secretary, second vice president and president-elect within the Pennsylvania chapter.

On the national level, Vertz chairs AAML’s Amicus Committee and serves as co-chair of the Practice & Technology Committee. Vertz has been a fellow of the AAML since 2003.

The AAML advocates policies promoting the rights of children and families facing divorce. Membership is limited to those recognized by judges and attorneys as prominent family law practitioners with a high level of knowledge, skill and integrity. There are currently only 1,600 members amongst 50 states.

Along with his reputation as a staunch advocate for families going through divorce, Vertz brings an MBA degree, specialized training in business valuation and a concentration in matrimonial tax issues to his practice.

He co-authored “Frumkes & Vertz on Divorce Taxation,” a nationally distributed legal treatise on tax strategy for family lawyers. He also publishes an insightful legal blog, FamilyLawTaxAlert.com, which provides current analysis on tax and financial issues for divorce lawyers and their clients.
