Candice L. Komar is a founding member of Pollock Begg. Prior to this, she was a shareholder in the family law division of Buchanan Ingersoll (now Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC). A strong litigator and comprehensive attorney, Candice often deals with divorces involving closely held businesses, complex issues and high net worth individuals. With a head for business and more than two decades of experience, Candice is able to quickly assess cases, synthesize the numbers and provide cost options and estimates to her clients.
Candice is recognized as a leading practitioner, litigator and highly skilled negotiator in matrimonial law. As a certified mediator trained in collaborative law, Candice understands the motivations and needs of the both sides of the case and is able to create strategies in her collaborative divorce cases that take each side’s interests (as opposed to positions) into account. Pursuing an interest in the psychotherapeutic dynamics of family law, she also holds a certification in constellation therapy through the Hellinger Learning Institute of Western Pennsylvania.
Candice majored in English and business at the University of Pittsburgh and found family law was a perfect fit for her enjoyment of words and her desire to use her analytical skills. She also studied ballet in her youth and as an adult and found being in a courtroom fit well with her love of performing. The discipline of ballet study also transfers to her courtroom preparation, and those skills and experiences serve her well. She has considerable trial experience in Allegheny and surrounding counties, particularly in valuation of closely held business interests, complex support cases and custody matters, including custody relocation.
Candice admires many people (particularly woman pioneers like Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart), but high on her list is fashion designer Coco Chanel because of her ability to come from a humble background, use her God-given talents to the fullest and build a lasting empire. It doesn’t come as a coincidence that Candice adores fashion.
Candice lives in Downtown Pittsburgh with her husband, Ivor Hill (originally of Nottingham England), and is the stepmother and stepgrandmother to his children on both sides of the Atlantic. A frequent attendee at Steelers games and a variety of charity events around the city, Candice also enjoys golf, yoga, photography, skiing, and dance (ballet and ballroom). Candice adores travel and recently started participating in mission building trips to South Africa.
Candice is a graduate of the University of Dayton School of Law, where she served as associate legislative note editor of the school’s law review. She earned dual bachelor’s degrees in English and business from the University of Pittsburgh.
Candice is admitted to practice law in all Pennsylvania State courts and the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Candice is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for her exceptional work in the legal profession and service to her community, including earning designation as one of the Pittsburgh Business Times Top 25 Women in Business for 2012. Candice has been named to the list of Pennsylvania Super Lawyers every year since 2007, the Super Lawyers Top 50 Women Lawyers in Pennsylvania list from 2009-2019 and the Top 50 Attorneys in Pittsburgh list repeatedly. She is honored to have been listed annually in The Best Lawyers in America since 2008 and to receive the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating of AV Preeminent.
Pennsylvania Super Lawyers and Pittsburgh Magazine have both featured her innovative work in the growing field of collaborative law. In addition to her collaborative law and constellation therapy certifications, Candice earned a mediation certification through the Association of Conflict Resolution.
Candice is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the Allegheny County Bar Foundation, the Collaborative Law Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. Candice helped found the Pittsburgh chapter of the Matrimonial Inns of Court, where she served in various capacities. She was appointed by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to serve on its Continuing Legal Education Board and is a member of the Pennsylvania and Allegheny County bar associations’ Family Law sections. She actively participates in the ACBA’s Women in the Law Division and led a panel discussion on Empowerment at its most recent summit. A firm believer in mentoring other women, Candice also served as a panelist on the “Women, Lead!” conference as part of Carlow University’s observance of International Women’s Day 2020.
Candice is a frequent guest on WPXI’s Pittsburgh Cable News Channel “NightTalk” and “Pittsburgh Now” programs and a lecturer for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute as well as the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law’s Forensic Fridays. Candice is also a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh, Class XIV and has been published in the University of Dayton Law Review.
A resident of Downtown Pittsburgh, Candice is a huge proponent of our city’s amenities, a dedicated supporter of the area’s cultural attributes and a volunteer through several nonprofit and community organizations, both locally and abroad. These include: Neighborhood Legal Services, YWCA Legal Resources for Women, Uptown Legal Clinic at Bethlehem Haven Women’s Shelter and TIH Ministries.
Candice has served as vice president of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Association and as a board member of several community organizations, most notably the Dance Alloy and the Junior League of Pittsburgh, where she also held executive committee positions. Candice is a member of Pittsburgh Professional Women and Inspired Women Paying it Forward.
Face to Face
My interests cover such a broad spectrum that it would be difficult to include them all in such a small space. In a week I can easily go from a night at the theater to a Steelers game to playing with my young godson and his brother. I enjoy dressing up for formal charity events, but I’m equally happy traveling to South Africa and getting my hands dirty building churches and schools. I love art and photography and have recently been teaching myself to play the guitar. I am an enthusiastic participant of our cultural endeavors in Downtown Pittsburgh and a volunteer and supporter of many nonprofits locally and in Africa. Above all, I love traveling the world with my husband, Ivor Hill, who hails from Nottingham, England, particularly visiting my extended family overseas. Finally, no introduction of myself would be complete without also saying I have amazing friends with whom I’m grateful to spend a lot of time.
