PITTSBURGH — Brian C. Vertz, partner at Downtown Pittsburgh family law firm Pollock Begg Komar Glasser & Vertz LLC, was one of four lawyers to speak before the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges in Hershey, Pennsylvania, during the summer of 2015. The annual conference convenes hundreds of divorce and civil trial common pleas judges from Pennsylvania to discuss the business of the courts.

Vertz, accompanied by attorneys Deborah Cantor, Maria Cognetti and David Steerman, spoke on the topic of “What Family Lawyers Want You to Know.” Vertz prepared remarks specifically addressing the best practices for legal discovery, including proposing policies judges can adopt to resolve discovery disputes more easily.

“Engagements such as these help to bridge the gaps between lawyers, the courthouse and the client, ultimately creating a more transparent and respected environment for all,” said Vertz. “I was truly honored to be asked by the conference chair, the Honorable David R. Workman, to contribute to this ongoing conversation.”

The Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges was founded with the mission to promote governing justice throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The group researches, develops and disseminates information regarding legal procedures, or substantive law of interest and concerning to the judiciary. In addition, PCSTJ seeks to work with law schools, bar associations and other various organizations to advance projects created to elevate the administration of the law.

Vertz argues family law appeals in the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme courts and has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. A leader within the legal community, he currently serves as second vice president for the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and will ascend to the position of chapter president over the next three years. He is also national chair of the Amicus Committee. Vertz has been a fellow of the AAML since 2003 and is one of only three AAML-trained arbitrators in western Pennsylvania.
